Domestic Jobs Aren’t Only for Women!

Domestic work encompasses housekeeping, cleaning, cooking, laundry, childcare, and other household services performed in private residences. These roles have long existed as traditional employment, and the internet has created new platforms connecting household workers with clients seeking help. The work itself is straightforward: workers perform agreed-upon tasks, maintain homes or assist with daily living needs, and typically communicate directly with employers or clients about schedules and compensation.

Like many service-based jobs, domestic work has become a target for online scams. The common pattern involves job advertisements promising attractive pay for minimal effort, then requesting an upfront fee for "background checks," "certification," "training materials," or "access to job listings." Legitimate household employers do not charge workers money to begin employment. Work arrangements may be informal and direct, or handled through established home services platforms that charge clients—not workers—for access to vetted candidates.
Genuine domestic positions vary widely in pay and terms depending on location, the scope of work, employer expectations, and whether work is part-time or full-time. Earnings are negotiated between worker and employer based on market rates and job duties. Anyone considering domestic work should verify a potential employer's legitimacy, communicate clearly about pay rates and conditions before starting, and remember that legitimate work never requires paying a fee to secure the position.
How to stay safe
The universal rule: a legitimate job or client pays you. Never pay an upfront fee, buy a "starter kit", or deposit a check and send money back. See how to spot work-from-home scams and how we screen for them.
